Public Lands Corps
Overview
The Public Lands Corps is a program within the US Forest Service that offers meaningful (and paid) work while you advance the conservation and stewardship of public lands. “You will contribute to important work in wildfire risk reduction, trails and recreation management, habitat restoration, research, visitor services and more, developing skills necessary to join the next generation of conservation leaders.”
If you complete 640 hours of work with the Public Lands Corps, you’ll receive 2-year non-competitive hiring authority. This allows for a permanent position with the Forest Service or other agency. There is a wide variety of project types offered, including, but not limited to, trail maintenance, wildlife mitigation, preservation of historic structures, conservation education and public affairs.
Who is eligible?
- Be between 16-30 years old, or up to 35 years old for veterans.
- Be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
The Pathways Program
Overview
The Pathways Program offers clear paths to federal internships for students from high school through post-graduate school and to careers for recent graduates. The program also provides meaningful training and career development opportunities for individuals who are at the beginning of their federal service.
The Pathways Program is composed of three programs:
- The Internship Program for current students from high school to graduate level.
- The Recent Graduates Program for people who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs (two years from the date the graduate completed an academic course of study).
- The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program for people who obtained an advanced degree (e.g., graduate or professional degree) within the preceding two years.

What is the Schedule A Hiring Authority?
Schedule A allows individuals to apply for a federal job through a noncompetitive hiring process. This means that if you meet the eligibility status of the job and the minimum qualifications for a position, you may be hired for the position without competing with the general public. Veterans
Overview
If you are a veteran, you have a great chance of working for the federal government! Nearly 30% of federal employees are veterans, which is more than triple the percentage in the private sector. The federal government truly values the service of our nation’s veterans and encourages their employment.
Who is eligible?
Only veterans discharged or released from active duty in the armed forces under honorable conditions are eligible for veterans’ preference. You must provide acceptable documentation of your preference or appointment eligibility.
